Are There Degrees of Sin October 7, 2009

This is a difficult question that I don’t really know.  I have been thinking about this pretty much all week, but I think that there aren’t degrees of sin.  To God a small lie will send you to hell just as much as killing someone.   In God’s original law to Israel he said that if a child disobeyed his parents he was to be stoned (throwing stones at someone until they were dead).  I don’t think many children sinned back then.  Now if you kill someone you go to jail for life or get executed, but if you tell one lie or disobey your parents one time no one cares.  I think that our culture has said that theses laws are too strict compared to the crime.  Sin is sin to God, and so we’re putting ourselves at a disadvantage because I’ll bet that the Israelites sinned a lot less than we did, for they were under stricter law.  Soon we will be held accountable for our actions and we have a lot more sin than the Israelites.

A Very Mistaken Poet October 4, 2009

Today during the sermon at church the pastor talked about the last chapter of Amos.  The sermon was on sin and omnipresence (the divine attribute of God of being everywhere at once).  During the sermon he talked about a German poet who on his death bed, when asked by a priest whether he was forgiven or not, said, “God will forgive my sins; it’s his job.”  (You can now buy this in poster form.)  I am afraid I have to disagree with him.  It’s not God’s job instead it’s his free gift.  I feel very sorry for this poor man who is going to hell.  I am also sorry that I could not get a picture of this poster for you.  As always please feel free to leave comments or to point out typos.
